Randy Veldman sole winner of June 1 event, rain halts action

Marne, MI – It was the Prelude to the Battle at Berlin 251 and teams from across the country rolled in to Berlin Raceway to prepare their cars not only for the nights race, but for the Battle at Berlin on Saturday, June 15. A stout field of Budweiser Super Late Models were on hand along with the Engine Pro Super Stocks, Enterprise Iron & Metal Sportsman and the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinders. Unfortunately, the rain interfered with the show and only the Sportsman feature was completed.

The Enterprise Iron & Metal Sportsman division was the first on the track; #38 Maurice Davis was on the pole with #9 Tyler Sterken on his outside for the 25-lap feature. Sterken jumped to the lead and was followed closely by #89 Kirk Meissner and #33 Allen Davis. On Lap 3, the top three went 3 wide and it was Meissner taking the lead as #15 Scoot Root experienced mechanical problems bringing out the first caution of the race. Meissner and Davis kept it side by side for the next few laps with #26 Brian Thome and #1 Randy Veldman side by side right behind them. Davis claimed the lead on lap 6 as Meissner tried to hold off Thome and Veldman for second. They went three wide on lap 11, shuffling Meissner back to fourth and as they completed lap 13, it was Veldman who had the lead. Lap 14 saw the second caution, the #50 of Bill Funk spun on the backstretch. The restart was single file and that let Veldman pull away from the field as Thome was working over Davis for second. Thome got by with 8 laps to go and had to make up the 1.7 second lead that Veldman had over him and he was gaining on him with each passing lap, but there wasn’t enough time for him to catch Veldman. Veldman got his third win in a row and the rest of the top ten were Thome, Meissner, Root, A. Davis, #51 Shawn Simon, Sterken, #17 Jared Miller, #11 Samantha Jansen and M. Davis.

Second up was the Budweiser Super Late Model class for a 75-lap feature, #12 Tim DeVos and #20 Brian Campbell led the field to the green flag. It was Campbell who found himself with the lead once the race began and DeVos fell in line behind him as the top ten settled in to single file racing. Campbell started to pull away as #23 Chris Koslek was fight hard to get second from DeVos. Lap 9 saw the first yellow of the race when the #52 of David Fretz spun on the frontstretch. As the field was coming to take the green flag, the #32 of Gabe Ensing spun off of the backstretch. Campbell was able to pull away again and Koslek resumed his battle for second with DeVos. The pace of the race was again halted by Ensing on lap 16 when he spun on the backstretch. Campbell got a great restart and pulled away again, but just a few laps later on lap 19 the caution came out for rain.

Once the rain hit the track, there was no end in sight and the event was halted and the Budweiser Super Late Models would finish their feature Saturday, June 29.
